I did make this visual for the Haring Stage at Allee Rentree Festival Enschede. I learned a lot during the process of making these visuals and that's why I like to share my experience with you.
For these visuals I was limited with the projector because only big contrast was visual on the ceiling where I projected on and I had only 1 day to make them.
Because of the need for contrast, I chose black and white for this project. And the time limit had me to make fast decisions on how to make my visuals. Normally I would make them within a program (AfterEffects, Illustrator, PremierePro), but this time I didn't have time for that at all, I had to work fast. So my thoughts went to my video camera which I then used to film the things around me. I used the material in my home and at the festival terrain. I filmed staircases, stones even my own curtains which have a nice pattern in them. If you look around you you will find all kinds of good material and because I had to think and work fast this became really clear for me. It also gives a more natural feel in some of the motions and I think it worked out really well. There is one more thing I had to deal with and this is that there where several genres of music I had to deal with. At the beginning I had no idea where to go with all those different rhythms, But then I noticed something while making the visuals. If you look at the visuals you see different kinds of motion. You see things (objects) moving, but also the camera has movement and then there is a movement of appearing and disappearing, sometimes I added a little wave which gave me another dimension of motion. So what I noticed is that when you have all these motion which have a different tempo or should I say rhythm there will always be an option to get when of the motion synced with one of the different rhythms. Of course, it didn't work out all the time, but I must say it was totally to my advantage and it felt really good when I saw it live on all different artists.
First band you here is Zibabu, the first part is with the music in the background. After that you will see a small part of the live show of Zibabu at the festival.
Than Nono and The Sinkingship will appear also a small shot from the festival.
Then there is a little break and the after-party will start, which was Techno. For this I used a random techno song and with this, I want to show you that even if its a bit random it will fit in someway because of all the motion within the visuals.
I recommend you to project this as it has a much better feel if the visuals are being projected! The whole project was a big learning curve for me, to look around me and use the things around me, sometimes we search too far and get into a complex problem at least in my experience and now I had to deal with my surroundings and I loved it!
